School Street Mutiny occurs.

April 9, 1863

A riot breaks out after a sergeant tries to put irons on a drunken recruit in the basement of a recruiting office at 2 City Hall Avenue. When Capt. Charles Russell Lowell arrives, the recruits refuse his order to stop and attack some of the officers with swords. After warning he would shoot, Lowell fires a revolver that kills a young recruit named William Pendergast. The riot is subsequently put down. Lowell immediately goes to the State House to report the incident to the provost general of Massachusetts and to Gov. John Andrew, but no disciplinary action is taken against him.
